DRIVELINE TIPS II

TORQUE

1. Universal joints have a torque rotation direction. Installing joints in reverse rotation to zerk fitting will

result in premature failure. Proper rotation should be with zerk and rotation to the right.

2. End Yoke Torque Value - Nut holding end yoke to application should have torque value of 600 Ft Lbs. A

torque multiplier may be necessary to achieve specified setting.

3. Bearing Straps - Torque settings should be between 30 to 40 Ft Lbs.

4. Yokes are directional and have arrows indicating side away from transmission and power source.

5. Go - No Go Gauges - Tools available to pre-determine if yoke ears may be sprung. If bar, gauge will not

fit through ears, yoke is probably damaged.

6. Yoke Throat - Center area of yoke where material is machined down to narrowest point. Seam of

welded tubing should be towards one ear or the other, but never in center of throat area.

7. Critical Speed - Maximum speed at which shaft may safely operate, based on length vs. RPM vs. diam-

eter. Exceeding critical speed value may result in spontaneous disassembly.

8. Shaft Length - 60“ to 80” is safe margin. Consider using a 2 piece system for shafts in excess of 80”.

9. Balance Weights - Recommended number of weights per shaft is 7 for a single shaft and 9 for a two

shaft configuration.

10. Inclinometer - Tool available to help determine driveline angles and slope. Provides a

digital readout of degrees.
