DRIVELINE TIPS V
HINTS ON DRIVELINE SETUP
1. Determine the length of a driveline by measuring from U-joint center to U-joint center.
2. Meritor Maintenance Manuel MM-96147 (available at meritor.com/lod) contains helpful information
on driveline specifications and service.
3. Meritor Driveline Angle Analysis tool is available at Meritor.com in the North American Customer
Center section under Calculators in left nav.
4. Various tools used to measure and setup drivelines include the following: Spirit Level
Protractor, Electronic Protractor, Inclinometer, and Anglemaster.
5. Vehicle data important to driveline setup is as follows: Maximum Engine HP, Maximum
Engine RPM, Trans Top Gear Ration, Trans Angle, Phasing Type, and Rear Suspension Height.
6. Make sure that vehicle ride height is within normal specification.
7. Measurements over weld seams and balance weights will invalidate angle measurements.
8. Typically the Hypoid Forward Rear Axle Plane is the same as the Engine/Transmission Plane (usually
3° to 3.5°) in relation to measuring drivelines and angles.
9. Typically the Hypoid Rear - Rear Axle Plane is 10.5° to 11.5° in relation to measuring
drivelines and angles.
10. Safest driveline operating angles are below 5°.
