CAUTION

Set the caliper on the suspension or support it with a length of

strong wire. Do not let the caliper hang from the hydraulic

hose. Damage to components can result.

4. Lift the caliper up and off the support. Set the caliper on the

suspension or support it with a length of strong wire. Do not let

the caliper hang from the hydraulic hose.

5. Use a wire brush to clean the support rails and rail surfaces on

the caliper.

6. Reinstall the caliper on the support.

7. Reinstall the spring and retainer.

8. With the caliper assembled on the support, place a screwdriver

or other suitable tool between the rotor vanes. Rotate the wheel

by hand FORWARD to position the forward support rail in full

contact with the caliper support rail surfaces.

9. Use a feeler gauge to measure the gap.

If the measurement is 0.010-0.035-inch

(0.254-0.889 mm):

The gap is within specifications and no

shims are required.

If the measurement is greater than 0.035-inch

(0.889 mm):

Select an appropriate size shim from the

following table to achieve a gap within specifications. Do

not use a shim thickness that will result in a gap that is less

than 0.010-inch (0.254 mm).

If the gap is greater than 0.115-inch (2.921 mm):

Replace the support.

*Number 682 is the thinnest shim and will not have the part number

stamped on its surface.

Install the Shim

1. Remove the spring, retainer and bolt.

2. Lift the forward end of the caliper enough to provide clearance

between the caliper and the support rail to allow installation of

the shim. The widest side of the shim is to fit up against the

widest surface of the support rail. Figure 2.

3. Use disc brake grease recommended by Meritor to lubricate

the support rail surface on the caliper that will contact the

shim.

4. With the shim installed, return the caliper to its original position

on the support. Install the new spring and new retainer

provided in Kit E-6891. Install a new bolt.

5. Measure the gap to ensure it is within 0.010-0.035-inch

(0.254-0.889 mm). If the gap is not within specifications,

repeat the steps for installing shims with the next thicker shim.
