8. Reinstall the caliper onto the support.
9. Reinstall the retainer.
10. With the caliper in place on the support, pull out on the top end
of the caliper to open up a gap between the caliper rail and the
retainer.
CAUTION
Use only enough force to wedge the rails apart. Do not use
excessive force. Damage to components can result.
11. Place a screwdriver or other suitable tool into the gap between
the rail surfaces at “A” to maintain the distance when
measuring. Use only enough force to wedge the rails apart. Do
not use excessive force. Damage to components can result.
12. Use a feeler gauge to measure the gap at “A”.
If the measurement is within 0.005-0.035-inch
(0.127-0.889 mm):
The gap is within specifications and no
shims are required.
If the measurement is 0.036-inch (0.914 mm) or
greater:
Select an appropriate size shim from the table to
achieve a gap as close as possible to 0.005-inch
(0.127 mm).
If the gap is greater than 0.130-inch (3.302 mm):
Replace the support.

*Number 690 is the thinnest shim and may not have the part
number stamped on its surface.
Install the Shim
1. Remove the retainer.
CAUTION
Set the caliper on the suspension or support it with a length of
strong wire. Do not let the caliper hang from the hydraulic
hose. Damage to components can result.
2. Lift the caliper up and off the support rail. Set the caliper on the
suspension or support it with a length of strong wire. Do not let
the caliper hang from the hydraulic hose.
3. Lubricate the rail surfaces of the caliper with grease approved
by Meritor for disc brake applications.
4. With the shim installed, return the caliper to its original position
on the support. Install a new retainer and a new bolt provided
in Kit E-6892. Figure 2.

5. Measure the gap at “A” between the retainer and caliper rail to
ensure the gap is not less than 0.005-inch (0.127 mm).
If the gap is greater than 0.035-inch (0.889 mm):
Repeat the shim installation steps with a thicker shim. Do
not use a shim thickness that will result in a gap width that
is less than the 0.005-inch (0.127 mm) minimum.
6. Install a new spring assembly provided in Kit E-6892. Install a
new bolt.
7. If the support is replaced, measure the gap again. Install a
shim if the gap exceeds 0.035-inch (0.889 mm).
